The main place for swimming is at small Calderitas Beach.
Snorkeling
No, Chetumal does not have great snorkeling, but from here you can get a ferry to some of the best snorkeling spots in the world Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye in Belize.
Diving
An hour and a half up the coast, at Majahual and Chinchorro Banks.
Bike Riding
Not bad for a city; you can rent bikes near Parque de Renacimiento and ride for miles along the cement sidewalk skirting the bay.
Fishing
Hire a fisherman to take you fishing at Punta Catalán.
Walking
Avoiding the heat of the day; you can walk for miles along the cement sidewalk skirting the bay.
Kayaking
The big bay would be great for kayaking, though no rentals as far as we know.
Boating
Hire a small boat at the Muelle Fiscal or Punta Catalan for boat trips on the bay or RÃo Hondo.
Club Scene
Club scene is limited.
Supermarket
There's a Chedraui at the one shopping mall and several smaller grocery stores around town.
Museums
The Museo de los Maya is great if you're in the area, but don't make a special visit.
Ruins
The Maya sites of Kohunlich, Dzibanché and KÃnichná are all worth a visit and within an hour of Chetumal.

No lake, but on Mexico's largest bay and near cenotes around Laguna Bacalar.

A city and seat of state government, Chetumal is still rather provincial.

Beautiful beaches about 1.5 hours to the north near Majahual; unique ecosystem north of that at Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.

Close to the Central American border at Belize.
